Politicizing abortion (and by extension, religion) was one of the smartest political moves Republicans have ever made. It motivates people that otherwise might not vote, or might vote Democrat for economic reasons, to vote Republican based on an issue that has NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on their personal quality of life. It's really quite brilliant, if you think about it.
Food stuffs should never be used as fuel stuffs. If you want to make biofuels, fine. Use something people don't eat. Food-based biofuels are terribly misguided.
They started making fuel out of cassava root and--SURPRISE--the cost of cassava is going up. It's a food staple in the Philippines, Cambodia, and throughout Africa, but in countries like China, where it isn't a food staple, they are using cassava specifically because cassava prices won't affect them as much as corn prices.
The whole thing is so backwards. We cannot ignore the fact that energy crops clearly compete with food crops. Food should always be the highest priority. "Food comes first."
Regardless of what we think about our representatives' performance (or lack of), people need to take vacations, even if it's just time off to rest at home. It's not healthy to work constantly without leisure time. People in high-stress jobs should absolutely take regular breaks from their work.
I don't understand why people compare and contrast the number of days Presidents went on vacation, as though vacation days are somehow relevant to performance. They're not.

A few months ago Obama said standardized testing bores and
"punishes" some students and he thinks performance should be measured with additional criteria (attendance, basic competency). He drew a clear distinction between exams that teachers administer individually versus standardized testing.
IIRC "no test" curriculum experiments have failed spectacularly in the past (but I believe these were only done at the collegiate level?). I would be surprised if someone was seriously advocating the elimination of testing as a performance measure.
McCain was right when he blasted his colleagues the other day, and O'Reilly is right in his assessment that Republicans are engaging in political suicide FOR NO DISCERNIBLE REASON WHATSOEVER.
Meanwhile, revenue increases, the supposed "sticking point" of the debate, have been neatly shuffled aside, because now the REAL issue is actually lifting the debt ceiling. Now Democrats don't have to pretend they want to take money from their millionaire campaign donors and Republicans can say they took a stand for the people (that actually matter).
Neatly played, except freshmen Republicans didn't realize they were bi-winning--so much for sitting at the big-kids table. Obama folds like a deck of cards (as usual), revenue increases are now off the table in both plans, and Republicans still don't want to salvage their political hides. Or rather, certain freshmen Republicans don't understand the give-and-take of politics. I never thought I'd say this, but I have a lot more respect for career politicians than I used to thanks to this recent infusion of Tea Party wunderkind.

I don't want to say I'll NEVER vote for a Republican again, because the political climate will eventually change, but I am so soured on the GOP right now I really can't imagine the sort of 180 they'd need to pull as a group to regain my trust and support.
I wish our representatives (and I use that term loosely) would get over themselves and do their jobs. Pathetic. In any other job that sort of work ethic would get you fired.
