There are a few things that sports writers love.

Be it for political or peer pressure, college football was headed for a playoff. You knew it; I knew it; even Smokey knew it.

Growing up did the younger 5@10 ever have a no-name sports hero?

The biggest star from the biggest stage in sports will be center stage at the Chattanooga Times Free Press Best of Preps banquet in June.

John "Thunder" Thornton is a renowned land developer and fan of University of Tennessee athletics. This Saturday, he's going to blend those passions.

Don't forget Friday's mailbag; we have a couple of open spots. From the "Talks Too Much Studios" here we go.

What would you say if you were hours away from your lifetime dream? Would you be speechless? Would you be nervous? Would you be so excited you needed an hourly Ritalin cocktail? Yes, yes, you would.

The Tennessee Volunteers are speeding toward today's Orange and White game that will signify the end of spring football practice. Here are the most important accomplishments about spring practices everywhere:

We have vowed to use the word "Twitch" frequently after UT football coach Derek Dooley praised Jordan Williams' "twitch" earlier this week.

Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III make this a special draft class of quarterbacks, and those surely will be the first two names off the board. They also have more pressure than any two rookie quarterbacks in recent memory.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Bubba Golf sure looks like a lot of fun. Masters champ Bubba Watson showed the world that the grip-it-and-rip-it style can land the biggest prize in professional golf.

Wow, what a weekend. It was a crazy Sunday afternoon in Augusta, and here’s saying it will be a crazy Monday too, with our TFP golf writer David Uchiyama playing Augusta National today. (Yes, we’re very afraid.)

Before this Masters, early last week when the talk was Tiger’s return or Rory’s welcome back, Phil Mickelson was asked what it would mean to win his fourth green jacket. “It would mean a lot,” Mickelson said, overstating the obvious.

Final round updates

Here we are, looking back at a crazy Saturday at Augusta National that featured big strides forward and big slides back. The leaderboard flipped on us, turning upside down at least twice and leaving everyone asking, “What just happened?” and “How did he do that?”

A near-record 63 players made the cut at this Masters. Almost all of them shared one game plan: Attack the four par 5s. The anticipated third-round shootout at Augusta National never developed.

Live from Augusta

Innocently known as Holly, the 18th hole at Augusta National played as a beast on Friday for most of the second round of the Masters. “It’s playing like a par-5,” Brandt Snedeker said of the 465-yard, uphill par-4. “I drove it well and I hit 3-wood in, and with the wind whipping around the top of the trees, it’s tough.”

Standing on the first tee Friday morning around 11, Larry Mize took it all in. The swaying trees, the respectful patrons, the thick silver clouds that matched his hair, even the gusting winds and cool temperatures that made this feel more like a British Open than the Masters.

Thursday started with three perfect tee shots from three of golf's giants. Among the gallery watching Gary Player, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus open the 76th Masters at Augusta National Golf Club was three-time champ Phil Mickelson, clad in one of his green jackets.

We are going to move quickly and frequently today. From the satellite offices here at Augusta National, let’s go.
