Republicans marched confidently to the brink of House control Tuesday night in midterm elections shadowed by recession, promising a conservative majority certain to challenge President Barack Obama at virtually every turn.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans gained a Senate seat in Indiana and powered to leads in 10 House districts currently held by Democrats in midterm elections Tuesday night, early fruits of a drive to break the Democrats’ grip on power in Congress.

As early voting starts today, Republican congressional candidate Chuck Fleischmann returned to the airwaves for the first time since he captured the GOP nomination in Tennessee’s 3rd District.

The health care reform plan adopted by Congress this spring will drive up health care costs and will have to be revamped next year to be financially viable, U.S. Sen. Bob Corker said Monday.

With early voting less than three weeks away, one of the leading candidates in the 3rd Congressional District race will not commit to debating his opponents.

Democratic 3rd Congressional District candidate John Wolfe on Tuesday repeatedly linked his GOP opponent, Chuck Fleischmann, to the tea party movement during a speech at the Greater Chattanooga Democratic Women’s Club.

With less than five weeks before early voting starts, the eight candidates in Tennessee’s 3rd Congressional District don’t have any plans for face-to-face debates.

U.S. Sen. Bob Corker said he will introduce legislation after the November elections he hopes will “change the way Washington does business” by capping federal spending as a share of the U.S. economy.
