Bond has been set at $30,000 for a Dalton State College professor facing child molestation, sodomy and rape charges.

Monte Gale Salyer, 58, is accused of molesting an 8-year-old girl and two other young girls whose families he befriended at church.

Salyer represented himself Friday morning in front of Whitfield County Superior Court Chief Judge William T. Boyett.

He faces charges of enticing a child for indecent purposes and two counts each of aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy and statutory rape.

Bail bonding businesses typically charge between 10 and 12 percent of the total bond amount, so Salyer could get out of jail for between $3,000 and $3,600.

Salyer was still in custody at 3 p.m. Friday, but someone had inquired about bailing him out, according to Whitfield County Sheriff's Sgt. Tanya Hill.

Salyer, who does not qualify for a public defender, has indicated he plans to hire an attorney, said Ashley Sparks, an administrative assistant in the public defender's office.

Whitfield County sheriff's deputies first arrested Salyer on Jan. 27 on charges that he fondled an 8-year-old girl.

Sheriff's investigators arrested him again on Wednesday after they discovered a Tennessee girl, now 16, and a Florida woman, now 20, who both said Salyer befriended their families at church and molested them during their early childhoods.
