Wes Moore, in his first season coaching girls' basketball at District 7-AA member Notre Dame, formerly coached boys' basketball at Signal Mountain and makes his first return to his old gymnasium tonight.
He said it's simply a district game, an important one for his team as the season winds down, and he hopes everything is low-profile.
"I doubt that'll happen," Moore said.
Impressive intuition, coach.
"It's all over the place," Signal Mountain girls' coach Jason Hill said. "We're planning a white-out. Our whole band will be there, not just a pep band. The buzz is in the air. Everybody's talking about it."
Moore and Hill are actually best friends. Hill was best man in Moore's wedding. The two have envisioned coaching together at some point, but Hill said neither will give in to being the assistant.
"Until that happens," Hill said, "I guess we're just going to have to face each other."
Students wearing white to tonight's games will receive one dollar off regular admission. The girls' game starts at 6 p.m., the boys' at about 7:30.
Roberson to Sequoias
South Pittsburg all-state offensive lineman D.J. Roberson (6-5, 315) signed with College of the Sequoias on Thursday. Roberson will join Signal Mountain linebacker Tim McClendon, who also signed with the California junior college. Roberson and McClendon played together at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe before transferring away last summer.
"We knew he was limited to junior colleges because of his grade situation when he came to us," Pirates coach Vic Grider said. "There were several that showed interest, but he liked the coach he talked with and I spoke with a lot of coaches who were familiar with that program to make sure it would be a good fit, because I know it's easy to get into a bad situation at some junior colleges.
"I think it will be good for him and McClendon both, since they'll be so far away from home, to have each other."
