U.S. troops in Iraq till 2016?

Iraq is a very painful, distasteful, frustrating, expensive — and deadly — subject for Americans.

We have been involved in Iraq for more than seven years, with more than 4,400 Americans killed, and many more of our soldiers wounded.

There unfortunately is no “end” — certainly no “victory” — immediately in sight.

And now the Iraqi defense minister says U.S. military forces will still be needed in Iraq till 2016 — and U.S. aid at least till 2020!

That is not a pleasing prospect.

In addition to the 50,000 US troops remaining in Iraq, there are approximately 100,000 US paid, private contractors/mercenaries making top dollar. Iraq is a giant money pit for the money the US borrows from China.

Yes,whatever,we are spread across the globe militarily and reaching the end point of thirty years of unipolar dominance. Odds favor a multipolar system evolving with no one country becomming dominant,at least for a few decades.

The big question in my mind is how the US will unwind the worldwide net that has been built. More than 700 bases in more than 126 countries will be no small task to take down.

When will the unwind begin? My best guess is that within three years it will be underway. A combination of economic reality and America's loss of leadership status will start the ball rolling.

It began several years ago I think. The Philippines for example.

That only took what, 90 years?

Some of us might live to see it yet.
