Barbara Brown

Barbara C. Brown, 97, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at her home.

She leaves to mourn sister, Polly Haywood, of Alabama; daughters, Dianthia Safford, Claudette Walton and Andrea Washington, Florida; one stepdaughter, Charlie Bell Kinsey; adopted son, Kenneth Grissom; stepgrandson, Michael Brown; four grandchildren, Celeste Walton, Georgia; Sherman (Dayna) King, Chandra Walton, Nashville; and Claude King, Missouri; two great-grandchildren, Kyre King and Liala King, Missouri; beloved cousin, Lucille Watson; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

William Thomas Bryan, 60, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, March 14, 2010.

Rick Fox

Charles Richard “Rick” Fox, 56, of Soddy-Daisy, died on Thursday, March 11, 2010.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard where he was stationed in Maine. He was a 1986 graduate of Chattanooga State with a degree in small business management. Rick will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure to be part of his life.

Survivors include his daughter, Kristina Hamblen and her spouse, Mark, of Maine; grandson, Paul Hamblen; parents, Laura and T.J. Fox; and a sister, Carolyn Strideoff; special friend, Cathy Bloodworth; his second angel “Little Bit” along with other nieces and nephews and friends.

At his request no services will be held.

John Thomas Hancock, 66, of Chattanooga, departed this life Monday, March 15, 2010.

He was born in Calhoun, Ga., to the late Clemon and Bertha Hancock, and was preceded in death by his brother, Clayton Lee Hancock; and granddaughter, Lisa Collins.

Survivors include his loving wife of 27 years, Sylvia Ann Hancock; mother-in-law, Lucille Lunsford, both of Chattanooga; children, Grady (Susan) Hargraves, of Cleveland, Robert Hargraves, Tracy (Misty Hullender) Sholtz, all of Chattanooga, Jackie Lingerfelt, of Rossville; siblings, Glynese Pierce, Patsy Patterson, Nancy Cox, Jean Brookshire, Annie Mae Owens, Demple Townsend, Sue Goble, Curtis, Jacky, David, Gary, Clarence, Steve “Pete” Hancock; grandson, Daniel (Laura Beth) Hargraves; two great-grandsons, Jayce and Braden Hargraves, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010 in the chapel with Rev. Ronnie Kesley officiating.

Interment will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

Family will receive friends after 4 p.m. today, all day Wednesday, and prior to the service Thursday.

Clyde Harvey

Clyde W. Harvey, 76, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2010.

Clyde served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a self employed painter for several years. He served as Constable since 1982 to present in Sequatchie County. He was an avid guitarist.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Harvey; mother, Dorothy Chastain; brother, Bill Harvey.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Louise Harvey; sisters, Sandra Lewis, Charlotte (Darwin) Gooden; stepson, Frank Langford; sister-in-law, Pat Harvey; brother-in-law, Bill Hartman and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at the North Chapel with the Rev. Bill Harvey and the Rev. Jim Barry officiating.

Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today, March 16, 2010, and on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the North Chapel.

Julia Haynes

Julia Elizabeth “Sally” Haynes, 75, of Chattanooga, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2010.

She was the daughter of the late Charles Cornelius and Addie Mae Hillis Flynn. She was born in Palmer, Tenn., and lived most of her life in Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lt. Cmdr. Claude M. Flynn and William H. Flynn.

She was an active member of Lake Hill Church of Christ since 1962, taught the 4- and 5-year-old Bible School Class, and later became a member of the Adult Bible School Class. Mrs. Haynes served as Republican precinct chairperson in Harrison for many years. She was the recipient of the Republican Party Lifetime Service Award along with the Muffet Brock Award for Outstanding Precinct Chairperson.

Survivors include her husband, Don Haynes Sr., to whom she married in 1961; two sons, Don Haynes Jr., and wife, Patti, and Paul Kevin Haynes and wife, Lana, all of Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Matthew and Tanner Haynes, and Leaha Artalona; sister and brother-in-law, Charlestine and James Grant, of East Ridge; two sisters-in-law, Grace Flynn, of Tullahoma, Tenn., and Jan Flynn, of Milwaukie, Ore.; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Davey Daniel, Patti Davis and the staff of COHA Group and the staff of Hospice of Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. today at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Minister Ray Winton officiating.

Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Margie Hullett

Marjorie “Margie” Ferguson Hullett, 86, of East Ridge, and previous resident of Signal Mountain for 41 years, passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2010 from an extended illness.

She was born on April 10, 1923 in Graysville, Tenn. Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Hullett, parents, granddaughter, Cherry Smith; great-granddaughter, Haley Smith; and sister, Nancy Kizzar.

Margie is survived by her daughters, Anne Smith and husband, Jerry, Ringgold, Ga., Janis Trant and husband, Douglas, Knoxville, Linda Hullett, Chattanooga and Marilyn Miller and husband, Tim, Chattanooga; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Mamie Nixon; brother, Jack Ferguson and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family requests that all attending the service be there by 12:45 p.m. Thursday to meet at the office for the procession.

James Dewey Jensen Jr., 45, lifelong resident of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2010.

Thaddeus S. Lewis, 60, passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2010, in Chattanooga.

Helen Miller

Helen Timney Miller passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and caregivers on Saturday, March 13, 2010, after a long and courageous struggle with Parkinson's disease.

She was born in Lonaconing, Md., on Nov. 17, 1925, to John and Hetta Timney. She was known to most and lovingly to her grandchildren as Timmie. She graduated from Frostburg State Teachers' College, and all of her adult life was devoted to education-first, as an energetic teacher and then, as an innovative and beloved head of the lower schools of Metairie Park Country Day School in Metairie, La., Ashley Hall in Charleston, S.C., and the Wright School (now UMS-Wright) in Mobile, Ala. She spent 25 summers as the assistant director of Camp Green Cove in Tuxedo, N.C. After her retirement she moved to New Orleans, and after Hurricane Katrina she made her home on Lookout Mountain.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Jenny Miller, Mary Cooper and Ruth Phillips; and her brothers, John Timney, Daniel Timney and Thomas Timney.

She is survived by her daughters, Susan Miller Howick, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., and Amy Miller Lapeyre and her husband, Chuck, of New Orleans, La.; her grandchildren, Hope McCrackin Howick, Meg Howick Torrence and her husband, Chas, Sara Michal Howick, Charles Christopher Lapeyre, Kathryn Timney Lapeyre and Rebecca Buckley Lapeyre; three nieces and six nephews; her sister-in-law, Genevieve Timney; and her dear brother, Harrison Warnick Timney.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Arlene Lovelady and her capable staff at My House Too for their devoted and loving care of our mother and grandmother. We thank Amedisys Hospice of North Georgia, also.

Martha Panni

Martha Jane Panni, 85, of Chattanooga, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, March 13, 2010.

She was a longtime member of St. Stephen Catholic Church.

Born on Feb. 18, 1925 in Tullahoma, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Aubrey and Nelle Leach. Martha grew up in Tullahoma where she was very active in high school and was head drum majorette with the marching band. After her marriage to the late Tee Panni, she moved to Chattanooga where she raised her family and with her husband opened Panni’s Presto Dry Cleaners in 1958. She worked there with her late husband for over 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, Floyd B. Chambers; and beloved son-in-law, Wayne T. Bledsoe.

Left with loving memories are her daughter, Teena Bledsoe, of Chattanooga; her son and daughter-in-law, David and Connie Panni, of Ooltewah; grandchildren, Chad Bledsoe, Julie and Jeff Legg, Mike and Ruthie Panni and Lisa Panni and great-grandchildren, Eli and Presley Legg and Ada Karoline, Aidan, Avery and Asher Panni.

A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen Catholic Church with Father Gilbert M. Diaz officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Leslie “Les” Carroll Shockley Sr., 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, March 12, 2010.

He was originally from Knoxville, but has lived in the Chattanooga area since 1969 and was a member of Maranantha Baptist Church. He was an Army Veteran, having served during the Korean War and was a member of Harrison Masonic Lodge F&AM. He was previously employed with Blue Ridge Transportation for more than 12 years and retired from Conoco-Phillips in 1990 after more than 28 years of service as a Terminal Supervisor & Safety Coordinator.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Florin and Lula Shockley; sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Dallas Shipe; and four brothers, Howard, Britton Alvin “Pete”, Bill and Roy M. Shockley.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Linkes Shockley, of Chattanooga; two sons, Tony (Eyvetta) Shockley, of East Ridge, and Les (Tonja) Shockley Jr., of Knoxville; foster son, Leo Deleonardo, of Chattanooga; sisters-in-law, Inez Shockley, of Sweetwater, Tenn., and Billie Rose Shockley, of Nashville; seven grandchildren, Tony Jr., Christopher Carroll (his namesake), Jacob Riley, Carley Addison, Andrew “Drew” Payne, Ryan Brandenburg and Blaine Augusta; four great-grandchildren, Emily Kaitlyn Moyer, Dylan Ray, Jada Marie and Mason Porter; several loving nieces and nephews and many other loving family members.

Ora Bell Thompson, 86, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2010.

Mrs. Thompson was a member of Suck Creek Baptist Church.

Jeanne Elliott Vaught, 84, of Chattanooga, with family at her side celebrated a reunion with Jesus and her husband, Bill, of 67 years, on Saturday, March 13, 2010.

She was a member of Chamblee Heights Full Gospel Baptist Church serving as deaconess, secretary, and former Sunday school teacher. Through the years she was a staunch supporter of International Board of Jewish Missions, 700 Club, TBN and Benny Hinn Ministries.

She pressed toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Elliott Cope and Paul Herbert Martin.

Left to carry on the Lord’s work for Jeanne are her survivors: sister, Ann Ainscough; brother, Dr. John D. Martin; four daughters, Margaret (Charles) Lee, Dianne (Mike) Bean, Mary Lou Vaught, Billie (Mike) King; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a loving grandmother, adored by all her grandchildren. She was one strong, amazing woman and one “tough cookie” who will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

WHITWELL — Johnny Lamar Ridley, 52, died Friday, March 12, 2010.

Sherron Sims

GRAYSVILLE — Sherron Marie Sims, 67, died at her home early Monday morning, March 15, 2010.

Sherron was born in Soddy-Daisy on Sept. 19, 1942 the daughter of the late James Knox and Beatrice May Knox Hamby and Willard Hamby. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marvin “Bo” Sims; sons, Curtis Sims and Marvin Sims Jr.; sisters Betty Reel and Audrey Harwood; and grandsons Ryan Ballinger and Andrew Jackson Sims.

Sherron lived most of her life in Graysville where and had been employed for over 20 years with Dri-Set and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her son, Andy (fiancée Stacia Holden) Sims, of Graysville; two daughters, Karen Beene, of Graysville and Fonda Ballinger, of East Ridge; two sisters, Loretta (Ray) Tucker, of Dayton and Brenda Knox, of Graysville; five brothers, Arthur Knox, of Grandview, Tony Knox, Bill Knox and Mike Knox, all of Graysville and Ricky Knox, of Evensville; grandchildren, Chancey Farris, Zachary Beene, Haley Beene, Kimberly Caraway and Lindsay Vaughn; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Sherron will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating.

Burial followed by a white dove release will be in Pleasantview Cemetery in Graysville.

Mark Smith Sr.

SPRING CITY — Mark Anthony Smith Sr., 52, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Rhea Medical Center, Spring City.

He was a longtime resident of Spring City, Tenn., and member of AME Zion Church and Chattanooga District Treasury Tennessee Conference AME Zion Church.

He was preceded in death by father, Thomas W. Smith; and brother, Ronald Smith.

Survivors: wife, Mary Ann Smith; three children, Mark A. Smith Jr., Allen Hickey and Jessica Nicole Smith; mother, Sallie Mae Smith Hyatte; one brother, Nevon Smith Sr.; three sisters, Teresa Ogilvie, Tara Blue and Lynn Willis; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be noon today in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Presiding Elder J. R. Bridgeman.

Interment in Pleasant Hill, Bakewell, Tenn.

Visitation 10 a.m.-noon at Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home, Dayton.

DECATUR — Gail Carter Wilson, 56, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, in U.T. Medical Center.

Funeral service 11 a.m. today in the Bowers Funeral Home Chapel, Decatur.

Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery.

Malva Blackwell

IDER — Malva Clayton Blackwell, 87, died Sunday, March 14, 2010, at Dekalb Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Blackwell was a charter member of Five Points Baptist Church and a 50-year member of Ider Eastern Star.

Survivors include daughter, Marjorie Cook, Ider; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Wayne Duke, Armuchee, Ga.; sister, Elmo Hulsey, Ider; grandchildren, Don (Debby) Kessler, Rita Cook, Danny Kessler, Junior (Gina) Cook, Clayton (Kay) O'Neal, Glen (Barbara) Cook; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be today, March 16, at 2 p.m. CDT at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel with Brother Buddy Strickland and Brother Fred Porter officiating.

Burial to follow in Liberty Cemetery.

RAINSVILLE — Elsie Swinford Gillispie 87, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2010, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. CDT today, March 16, from the W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel.

Burial will follow in Macedonia Cemetery.
