If 132-pound fighter Ryan Martin's goal Saturday was to build to a peak as we went along, then he accomplished his mission.

A dominant third round capped Martin's decision victory over the Johnson City Athletic Club's Jarred Reyes in one of 17 bouts in the 74th Chattanooga Golden Gloves at Central High School.

Martin, who fights locally for the Westside Boxing Club, which won the team title, began coming on in the latter stages of the first round. The fighters traded some shots in the second round, but Martin looked far more efficient in percentage of punches landed.

"I felt a little sluggish in the first round," he said. "My coach (Andy Smith) gave me some advice after the first round, and I took that advice and it worked out. I wasn't throwing my jab enough.

"He was holding his hands so high I started touching the body, and then his hands started dropping."

The touches Martin referred to landed with thud-like sounds throughout the final round.

"Ryan has always been a slow starter," Smith said. "That's one thing we've got to work on fixing before we go to Russia."

Martin and Smith leave April 10 for Colorado Springs, Colo., to train at the Olympic facility for week. From there they'll head to Baku, Azerbaijan, for two weeks. Martin is set to compete in the Cadet World Championships.

"Right now we've got to work on getting him in shape and fix a few technical things," Smith said. "We want to put him in the best possible position to win a gold medal."

Martin, now 10-0 as an open amateur, has plans to fight in Knoxville each of the next two weekends -- in the East Tennessee championships and then the Southern Regionals. Smith said regardless of how big or small a tournament is, Martin's focus remains the same. That included Saturday's fight in the 17-year-old's own high school gym.

"There's nothing like fighting in your home town," Martin said. "There's no greater feeling. Your family and your fans support you so good, you feel like you can't be defeated. It's like being on top of the world as a fighter."

Westside 75-pounder Slade Corvin defeated Israel Chavez from Whiteville, N.C. in the first fight of the night and one that Smith said was the best. Westside's other winner was 55-pounder Kiwon Toney, and Red Bank's Bruce Wilson also won his bout in the 55-pound weightclass.

William Fairbanks (75) and Jamie Ellison (165) were winners out of the Tellico Boxing Club.
