City passes property tax hikeStaff photo by Allison KwesellChattanooga Times Free Press - Protesters gather around the Chattanooga City Council Building before a Chattanooga City Council meeting to vote on a 37 cents per $100 of assessed value tax increase.

Citizens of Chattanooga keep complaining about the gangs, crime and violence, and problems that is plaguing the city, but will not pay a little extra for to combat the 21st Century trend. It's pretty stupid to consider not having a viable local government to increase the value of community living without putting into it themselves.
Property owners should pay more if they want their property value to increase!
When you pick-up the phone and dail 911 or 311 what do you expect to happen? What if no one answered your call for help, what would you do? The employees of the City of Chattanooga do a tremendous job and most of the time without compliant. The story no one tells is that most all city employees have not had any type of raise in the past seven years, but there insurance cost continue to rise with out fail every year. Most of the Fire and Police in the city have to hold down two jobs just to make ends meet, but you never hear those stories in the news. So citizens of Chattanooga keep complaining about paying higher taxes and see where it get us. One day when its your emergency and there is no one there to help because the city has to continue to cut its employee's benefits, and close Police precincts and close Fire Stations and lay-off its employees, just because you do not want pay a higher property tax. We all understand that times are hard for everyone, but if you want to continue to live in this wonderful city that we live in and continue to have the city services that we are all taking for granted, you might want to think twice before you raise your "NO NEW TAX" sign in the air...
You know there's a way to reduce crime, provide jobs, and raise taxes? Let's legalize the cannabis industry.
First, we would attack organized crime where it really hurts, in the wallet. Criminals would stop making money on the black market of this widely used plant.
Second, by legalizing cannabis we would open a new market for industrious, hard working citizens to profit from.
Third, legal cannabis could be taxed and regulated. This would not only make it safer to the consumer (most of whom are honest, hard working citizens) but would also provide another source of tax revenue for the city. With another source of tax revenue, perhaps the city would not have to raise our taxes.
Again, what the people wanted didn't matter...only the self serving "needs" of the mayor and his cronies... I say VOTE 'EM OUT!
Taxpayer, you would have made a great british loyalist in 1776, you sound more like a communist today.,These idiot in power are there to represnt the people not dictate to them, narrow minds like yours will never look for a better solution, just blindly bow down to the master and sling away like a good servant. Fight crime? When a thug breaks into a house, he should reasonable expect the owner or occupant will shoot him. When seconds count, cops are only minutes away. WHat is the point of services that no longer serve and protect? Cops are no longer menat to prevent crime but merely investigate it. THe actions of these city morons mirrors a certain European contry in the 30's. Lots of people have to work two jobs to make ands meet so don't look for any sympathy for city workers. THey picked their jobs, if it no longer suits them they should quit. Sounds to me like you benefit form the tax hikes, got your hand in someones pocket?
