A Seattle-based website connecting businesses with students seeking internships is test driving the Chattanooga market this fall.
InternMatch.com launched in May 2009 in the Seattle and Tacoma, Wash., areas and is meant to be a resource for businesses and college students. The Scenic City version is still growing, said InternMatch Chattanooga Outreach Director Fynn Glover.
“We’re taking it step by step,” he said. “Our initial target was to get 30 internship listings on the site, and now we’re past 60.”
Glover said he has been working for the past few months on building relationships with local businesses and colleges to explain how the site works. Students can log in, view the listings and apply directly.
The program is free for businesses to post internship openings now, but eventually it will cost about $25 per listing, he said. The site is, and will remain, free for the students.
Glover said the idea is that the program is mutually beneficial, since internships provide a cheaper source of labor for businesses while giving students valuable work experience.
Anthony Tucker, director for Covenant College’s Center for Calling and Career, has been letting students know about InternMatch for a few months and stresses the importance of attaining an internship while in college.
“This is encouraging for all of Chattanooga,” Tucker said. “Because keeping college students around after they’re done with school is pretty important, so it’s exciting for us.”
