A house fire in the East Lake community has left a family of 10 homeless, said Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner.

The house belonged to Floyd Brooks who told firefighters that he was outside working when one of his sons alerted him to the fire. Brooks then said he tried to put the fire out with a garden hose, but was forced outside by the intense heat and smoke, Garner said.

Chattanooga firefighters and several other fire companies were called to 2601 E. 45th St. where they rushed inside and got the flames under control, Garner said.

Brooks has seven pets dogs that survived the fire, however four pet kittens were believed killed.
