UGA hires Belin from Vandy staff

Georgia football coach Mark Richt rounded out his staff Friday by naming Vanderbilt linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator Warren Belin as a linebackers coach.

New Bulldogs defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is implementing a 3-4 scheme and will coach the inside or outside linebackers, with Belin handling the other. The specific roles have not been announced.

Belin worked with Commodores linebackers the past eight years and also coordinated special teams during the 2006-07 seasons.

"I'm looking forward to the next step in my career with Coach Richt and the opportunity to compete for SEC and national championships," Belin said.

Vanderbilt produced several impressive linebackers in Belin's watch, including Hunter Hillenmeyer, Moses Osemwegie, Jonathan Goff, Marcus Buggs, Patrick Benoist and Chris Marve. Hillenmeyer played this past season with the Chicago Bears, while Goff played for the New York Giants and Buggs for the Buffalo Bills.

Marve had 121 tackles in 2009, one shy of Georgia's Rennie Curran among Southeastern Conference defenders during the regular season.

"Warren has had some of the best linebackers and tacklers in the league for years," Richt said. "I've always admired his work at Vandy, and people have been talking to me about him for quite a while. When Todd and I interviewed him, we were very impressed with his knowledge of the game, schemes and fundamentals."

Belin played linebacker at Wake Forest from 1987 to '90 and had coaching stints at East Tennessee State, Cornell, William & Mary and SMU before arriving in Nashville.
