Batista back in time for the win

The pitcher's quick return from California helps the Lookouts defeat the Mudcats 4-2.

Try topping Kendy Batista's week so far.

The 27-year-old Venezuelan woke up Sunday morning as a Chattanooga Lookouts pitcher but got sent down to high Single-A Inland Empire and flew to California. He was told Monday he was needed back in Chattanooga, so he flew back Tuesday and earned the victory in Tuesday night's 4-2 win over Carolina at AT&T Field.

"I'm a little tired, but I'm happy I could help out," Batista said. "I thought I'd be staying at least a week or two out there, and then they told me I'd be coming right back. I started laughing, because I didn't think they were serious."

It wasn't a wasted trip, as Batista attended Inland Empire's game Monday night as a spectator. That was the third appearance Manny Ramirez had with the 66ers, and he went 1-for-3 before a crowd of 6,877 in San Bernardino.

Ramirez is expected to rejoin the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday after serving a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance.

"There were a lot of fans last night," Batista said. "They just told me to take it easy, watch the game and that tomorrow I'd be flying back to Chattanooga."

Former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda is expected to be in attendance at AT&T today and Thursday night. Lasorda, who guided Los Angeles to World Series titles in 1981 and '88, is in his 60th season with the organization and his fifth as a special adviser to chairman Frank McCourt.

Alberto Bastardo started Tuesday for the Lookouts (4-5) and pitched into the sixth inning. Batista came in and retired five of the six batters he faced, and he wound up improving to 4-0 and lowering his earned run average to 2.66.

"It's just one of those things you see every once in a while in minor league baseball," Lookouts pitching coach Glenn Dishman said. "You're sitting there on the plane hoping you don't have to pitch that night, but then you get to the park, see the crowd and it just gets you going. He's a great kid who does whatever we ask him to, and he's just so adaptive whether he's starting or coming out of the pen."

Chattanooga broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning when Ramon Nivar singled to center field, advanced to third on a fielding error by Sean Henry and scored on Josh Bell's sacrifice to right. Then Andrew Lambo doubled to right and Russ Mitchell and Eduardo Perez singled to left to make it 4-2.

Zach Cozart drew a leadoff walk for the Mudcats in the second inning and scored the game's first run on a fielder's choice by Brian Peterson. The Lookouts took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second when Mitchell drew a leadoff walk and Perez followed with a home run to right-center.

Despite allowing the run, Bastardo took a no-hitter into the sixth before Mike Griffin led off with a double to left. Griffin scored on a sacrifice by Cozart to tie the game.

James Adkins (2-5, 4.92 ERA) is scheduled to start this morning's 11:15 game for the Lookouts, with Lee Tabor (0-0, 3.68) scheduled for the Mudcats.
