Chattanooga: Business gets some breathing room
Employees inside Jody Millard Pest Control stepped around each other to answer telephone calls on a typical business day last week.
Others stepped against the walls to navigate workers crowded in the hallway of the business’ Hixson location.
That is why owner Jody Millard said additional space is desperately needed.
“We’ve just outgrown it,” he said of the 1,600-square-foot facility. “It just got to the point where we didn’t have any more room.”
Mr. Millard said a new 5,000-square-foot building being built next door will give his employees some much needed breathing room.
Five months ago contractors broke ground on a $375,000 building that Mr. Millard said will give them additional space and will allow him to lease office space to someone else. He hopes to be in the new location by Nov. 1.
“I’m really impressed with what they’ve done in just five months,” he said.
Watching the progress from her office next door, Jodie Ann Rader, Mr. Millard’s daughter and business partner, said she is excited about moving into the new facility.
“I’m ready to get into it now,” she said.
Jody Millard Pest Control likely will occupy about 3,000 square feet of the new building, which Mr. Millard said would double the space they are in now.
He will likely lease the remaining 2,000 square feet of the building as well as the current location.
The post office has agreed to let Mr. Millard keep his 1906 Hamill Road business address, Mr. Millard said. The address for the current office will then become 1908 Hamill Road.
Mr. Millard declined to release revenue information, but he said the additional space will give his 19-employee business room to grow — which it has done every year since it opened in 1996.
“We’ve grown every year,” he said. “Even this year, with people saying the economy is down, but we’ve had an exceptional year.”
Mr. Millard and Ms. Rader agree that growth is good but only if there is room.
“This has been money well spent,” Ms. Rader said.
