2-Year Colleges doubling as shelters

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama’s community colleges are serving another purpose and sheltering people who are getting away from Hurricane Gustav.

System spokeswoman Martha Simmons said nearly all of the system’s campuses can be used for shelters and several of them reached capacity Sunday afternoon.

Red Cross is providing assistance at many of the sites and Simmons said people should contact such organizations to find out where the nearest shelter is located and make sure they have room.
