MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Boyd-Buchanan’s Tarah Garner and Chattanooga Christian’s Will Reynolds won TSSAA Class A/AA state tennis singles crowns Friday at Middle Tennessee State University.
Notre Dame’s Jennifer Taylor and Jennifer Brouner won the girls’ doubles title.
Reynolds, a junior, battled nerves during his first individual Spring Fling appearance but won 7-5, 6-3 over University School of Jackson’s Ben Gaines. `
“It was a little miserable at first, because I still had a lot of nerves and that’s just not fun to go through,” Reynolds said. “Once I got the first set under my belt, that was huge and he started wearing down.”
Garner, also a junior, is Boyd-Buchanan’s first individual state champion in any sport. She defeated USJ’s Madison Patey 6-1, 7-5 in the final.
“She was a tough player and it was hard from the start,” Garner said. “My dad gave me a strategy the night before, and I tried to remember and do what he said.”
Taylor, a junior, and Brouner, a senior, won their first doubles championship, beating Elizabethton’s Jessica Brumit and Janey Robinson 6-2, 7-5.
