Peachy Balais

Maria Theresa "Peachy" Balais passed away peacefully after a strong fight against ovarian cancer on Saturday, May 10, 2008.

"Peachy" was the youngest daughter of Priscila and the late Loreto F. Balais.

By her side were her survivors, her loving mother, Priscila C. Balais, and older sisters, Maria Lourdes "Pinky" Balais and Susan C. Gilliland.

Peachy was the sweetest and most loving daughter, sister and friend.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Father George Schmidt officiating.

Entombment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 10 a.m. until time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Eric Bush

Eric Lebron Bush, 45, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008, after a brief illness.

He graduated from Brainerd High School in 1980, where he was the first African-American drum major and Key Club member. He received honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces; he served from 1981-1984.

He was preceded in death by father, James Bush; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs Connie (Nanette) Horton; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Bush.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories, loving and devoted mother, Elizabeth Bush; daughter, Erica; uncles, Curtis (Sheila) Horton, Eddie (Rhonda) Horton and Varnell (Jeanette) Horton, of Birmingham, Ala.; aunt, Doris Johnson, Birmingham; great-uncles, Jimmy (Dorothy) Silmon and Charlie Leslie; and a host of special cousins and friends; very special friend, Billy Green.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, May 13, in the funeral home chapel.

Interment in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon today and the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Louise Conner

Mary Louise Conner, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008, at her home.

Louise was formerly employed by the Hamilton County Court Clerks office and she was a graduate of the 1941 class of Chattanooga High School. She was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker and a member of Northside Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school.

Louise was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Lou Puckett, and father, Edwin Puckett, of St. Elmo.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Sam A. Conner II; two daughters, Cathy (Steve) McIntire, of Nashville and Libby (W.J.) Hydrick, of Atlanta; two grandsons, Marshall (Jane) Beckham, of Charleston, S.C., and Matthew (Jenny) Beckham, of Nashville; sister-in-law, Bettye (Fred) Seepe, of Chattanooga, brother, Ed (Lillian) Puckett, of Mobile, Ala.; nieces and nephews; and a dedicated team of caregivers, Linda and Belinda.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Chattanooga National Cemetery, Chattanooga, with the Rev. Joe B. Martin IV officiating.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Northside Presbyterian Church, 923 Mississippi Ave.

Immediately following the memorial service the family will welcome friends in the church Centennial Room.

Rebecca Craven

Rebecca Jayne Craven, 76, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008, in a local health care facility.

Ms. Craven was born in Chattanooga in 1931, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.C Craven. She graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1949 and the University of Chattanooga in 1954, where she received a bachelor of music degree. The following year, she received her master of arts in library science from George Peabody College. She spent two years in Germany working for the Army Special Services. Upon returning to the U.S., she spent a short time at the Library of Congress as an intern until accepting a position with the Cincinnati Public Library in the audio visual department. During her tenure of over 30 years with the CPL, she became head librarian in the audio–visual department and later director of the entire arts and music division.

She was an accomplished musician, playing both piano and the viola. During her last two years at UC, she performed with CSO. In Cincinnati, she performed with the Cincinnati Community Orchestra and was very active playing chamber music in various ensembles in the area. When she returned to Chattanooga in 1992, she played with the Senior Neighbors Orchestra and several ensembles. She was an avid cat lover and always had her "children" around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Craven; sister, Regina Craven Clarke; and brother, Roy C. Craven Jr.

She is survived by her brother, Jay M. (Kathleen) Craven; nephews, Dr. Jamie Craven, Curtis Craven, Fred Clarke; nieces, Resha Oliphant, Hillary Craven; and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Walter R. Thomas officiating.

William Earl Davis, 82, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2008.

George W. Goodson, 84, of Hixson, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, in a local health care facility.

Juanita Hall

Juanita Hall, 79 of Chattanooga, died Sunday, May 11, 2008, in a local health care facility.

She was a member of the White Oak Church of Christ and was a Red Cross volunteer for many years at Erlanger hospital.

Her sweet smile will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband C.W. "IBM" Hall; parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.B. (Elvin) McAdams; brothers, Floyd B. McAdams and Eugene McAdams; and a sister, Arlita Winstead.

Survivors: five daughters, Carole (Johnny) Underwood, of Apison, Cathy (Ronnie) Brewer, Linda (Gary) Brewer, June (Roger) Gortney, all of Chattanooga, and Sandy Vannoy, of Corpus Christi, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with Minister Eddie Rechard officiating.

Interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends after 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Earl William Ladd, 70, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 8, 2008.

Pauline "Polly" Selcer Merriman, 80, of Hixson, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008.

Perry Palmer

Perry James Palmer, 48, of Hixson, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008, in a local hospital.

Born on June 1, 1959, in Chattanooga, Perry graduated from Hixson High School in 1977. He went on to graduate with honors from Middle Tennessee State University in 1981, where he was a member of the SAE Fraternity. Perry was a CPA and the co-owner of Complete Bookkeeping Services.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Palmer, of Hixson.

Survivors include one son, Brandon Palmer, of Knoxville; father, Bob Palmer, of Hixson; sister, Suzanne Johnson, of Chattanooga; three brothers, Bobby Palmer, of Rome, Ga., Greg Palmer, of Hixson, and Mark Palmer, of Soddy-Daisy; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, May 12, in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Minister Bobby Palmer officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Sophia Hicks Parks, 96, of Chattanooga, passed April 27, 2008, in a local nursing home.

She was a member of St. Elmo Baptist Church.

She is survived by son, Eugene (Lona Bell) Parks, of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother, Walter Hicks, of Milwaukee, Wis.; granddaughter, Rosalyn (Willie) Owens; several great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral service will be noon Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at St. Elmo Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Church officiating.

Burial will be in Ruth Cofer Cemetery.

The body can be viewed after 1 p.m. today at the McCallie Avenue Chapel of Franklin-Strickland Funeral Directors.

Henry Sparks

Henry Sparks, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2008, in a local health care facility.

William Tucker

William Tucker, 85, of Chattanooga, was called to Heaven on Saturday, May 10, 2008.

A Christian man, his life centered around his home and family. He was a member of Lupton Drive Baptist Church for the past 10 years and was formerly a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church. Mr. Tucker retired from EPB after 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Frances Vaughn Tucker, Chattanooga; daughters, Tonja (Neil) Kenemer, Memphis, Samuella (William H.) Miles, Brentwood, Linda (Darryl) Hibdon, Red Bank; grandson, William F. (Gwen) Miles; great-grandchildren, Davin and Reagan Miles; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Bell and the Rev. Roger DeHart officiating.

Pallbearers will be Karl Christison, Ronnie McJunkin, William F. Miles and Emory Shipp.

Eugene Smith Wilhoit, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008, at a local health care facility.

He was the son of the late Osborne and Mamie Wilhoit.

He was veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and a member of Apison Baptist Church.

He retired as a chief mechanic with the Electric Power Board.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Harris Wilhoit; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Terry Jackson, of Fort Collins, Colo.; granddaughter, Christine Jackson; eight nephews, Warren Mills, of Statesville, N.C., Wayne Wilhoit, Lynn Wilhoit, Michael Wilhoit, all of Atlanta, Charles Wilhoit, of Soddy-Daisy, Rodney Wilhoit, of Chattanooga, Steve Wilhoit, Randy Wilhoit, both of Apison; and two nieces, Nancy Simpson of Maryland and Beverly Gahgen, of Miami, Fla.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. today in the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Interment will be in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Alberta Yeoman

Alberta May Yeoman, 84, of East Ridge, died Friday, May 9, 2008, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Yeoman was retired from the Hamilton County Health Department and was a member of Chattanooga First Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Shull; and a brother, Richard Huff.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Yeoman; son, Greg Yeoman, both of Chattanooga; daughter, Shirley Zanes, McDonald, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Bradley Yeoman, Brian Yeoman, Paul Zanes and Mark Zanes.

Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Fred Fuller, Pastor Ralph LaFave and Pastor Paul Eirich officiating.

Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Eva Ladd

SEQUATCHIE -- Eva Pearl Ladd, 77, died Saturday, May 10, 2008.

Mrs. Ladd had a passion for helping others, was known for her chicken and dumplings and loved to draw. She donated her time each year to help the Shriners with the Cornbread Festival, and she attended the Friendship Worship Center in Wildwood, Ga.

She was the daughter of the late David D. and May Fulfer Hardy and was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Olan Ladd.

She is survived by her children, Joyce Ladd, of Sequatchie, Barbara (Ken) Thomas, of Mount Vernon, Ind., and Gloria Ladd, of Evansville, Ind.; five grandchildren, Kevin Dausman, Stephanie McGary, Jessica Stocker, Stephanie Thomas and Daniel Thomas; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. CDT Tuesday, May 13, conducted from the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip Layne and the Rev. Jonathon Lawson officiating.

Interment will be in Lasater Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. CDT today at the funeral home.

Dexter Smith

DAYTON -- Dexter R. Smith, 80, died Friday, May 9, 2008, at Parkridge Medical Center in Chattanooga.

Dexter was born in Rhea Springs on June 20, 1927, the son of the late William Houston Smith and Minnie Miller Smith.

He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Hubert Smith and Paul Smith; sisters, Vergie Malone, Ruby Fugate, Joan Smith; son-in-law, Benjamin Powell; and brother-in-law, Dale Green.

Dexter lived all of his life in Rhea County where be was a member of First Baptist Church. Dexter retired after many years as a distribution manager for Kayser-Roth in Dayton.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rita Green Smith; two daughters, Sharon (Roy) Rice and Marilyn Powell both of Dayton; grandchildren, Chris (Alyson) Rice, Kevin (Melissa) Powell, Amber (Tommy) Edgeman, all of Dayton and Eric (Debbie) Rice, of Harrison; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Iva (William) Ellis and Faye Riggs, both of Dayton; brother, Lester Smith, of Bellevue, Mich.; brother-in-law, Berry (Mildred) Green, of Newbern, N.C.; sister-in-law, Alene Smith Green, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Milton Knox and the Rev. Bill Ewing officiating.

Burial will be in Rhea Memory Gardens followed by a white dove release.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Henry A. "Bud" Brewer died Friday, May 9, 2008, unexpectedly.

Curtis loved people and enjoyed life to the fullest. His favorite hobby was rock collecting.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Tony Cabe.

Survivors include his parents, Grady and Bobbie Cabe, of Rossville; sister-in-law, Phyllis Cabe; nieces, Christie Perkins and Sami Cabe; great-nieces, Shelbey and Lexi Perkins.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia Green; great-grandson, Cory Green; and son-in-law, Ronnie Keith.
