Mudcats 4, Chattanooga Lookouts 3

Sunday’s recap: Brett Hayes homered to left off Lookouts closer Josh Roenicke with one out in the ninth inning to propel Carolina (21-16) to its second win over Chattanooga (19-18) this season in seven tries. The Lookouts entered the ninth trailing 3-2 but tied the game when Sean Henry’s two-out single to right scored Eric Eymann. Chattanooga took a 1-0 lead when Shaun Cumberland led the game with a triple to right and scored on Tonys Gutierrez’s two-out single to right. The Mudcats quickly answered in the bottom of the first when Lorenzo Scott and Cameron Maybin had consecutive homers to left. Chris Coghlan followed with a single to center to give Carolina three game-opening hits and scored on Lee Mitchell’s one-out double to left.

Next game: Game three of a five-game series in Zebulon, N.C., is tonight at 7:15.

Pitchers: Daryl Thompson (2-1, 1.45) is scheduled to start for the Lookouts, with Aaron Thompson (0-3, 4.42) scheduled for the Mudcats.
