Gusts cause widespread power outages, block roads throughout the Chattanooga area
Homes and businesses throughout the Chattanooga area experienced power outages Sunday as high winds caused trees and limbs to fall, downing power lines and blocking roads, according to communications dispatchers.
In Georgia, Catoosa County officials said power was restored by late afternoon; in Walker County, some customers in the hardest hit areas of Chickamauga and LaFayette continued to experience outages until nightfall.
Downed trees and power lines were reported throughout Rhea and Hamilton counties, officials said.
“We have power out everywhere,” said EPB senior manager of system analysis and control Don Nanney. “Bakewell, Signal Mountain, Apison, Highway 58 — no place in particular.”
Falling trees started downing lines in the mid- to late-morning hours he said, and about 2,000 customers were without power at about 6 p.m.
“If the wind would ever let up, we could catch up,” he said.
