Chattanooga: Baylor clinches D-II East
McCallie outfielder Guerin Higgins made two spectacular catches.
But he couldn’t catch the ones that landed over the fence, and the Blue Tornado could never really catch on to Baylor pitcher Chase Riemer in the Red Raiders’ 5-1 win on Wednesday.
Andy Shuford and Zeth Stone belted solo home runs for Baylor (28-5) who clinched the Division II East District Championship.
“We pecked away and got one run three different times,” Baylor coach Gene Etter said. “I knew that the lead could vanish quickly.”
Riemer pitched a complete game, struck out five and walked none. He escaped a situation in the fourth inning with runners on second and third, by getting a strikeout and a groundout.
“Its a great feeling to beat McCallie because they’re such a good team,” Riemer said. “I felt like I had things in control.”
Baylor scored in the first on a scary collision between second baseman Alex Burd and right fielder Jerod Coleman. Burd remained on the ground for several minutes while trainers examined him before returning to the game.
Shuford’s homer in the third gave Baylor a 2-0 lead, Stone’s in the fourth made it 3-0. Isaac Edmonds drove in two with a single in the fifth. McCallie (25-9) shortstop James Campbell had an RBI single in the fifth.
“It was a typical Baylor-McCallie game,” McCallie coach Chris Richardson said. “They took advantage of our mistakes, and we didn’t take advantage of theirs.”
