With fuel costs spiraling, Bi-Lo is launching an effort in which its Chattanooga-area customers can turn grocery purchases into free gas.

“Our new Free Gas Program is a great addition to our ongoing efforts to help our customers,” said Bi-Lo Executive Vice President Tye Anthony.

Beginning today, Bi-Lo patrons can earn gas tokens when they make purchases using their bonus card. After collecting eight gas tokens, customers can redeem them at the customer service center of any local Bi-Lo store for a $25 BP or Shell gift card, according to the chain.

“A strategic shopper can earn 11 tokens in a single visit,” Mr. Anthony said.

According to the latest data from the U.S. Commerce Department, American consumers are spending about 28 percent more on gasoline than they did just a year ago.

“We hear every day from people about how they are stretched and how they feel frustrated over the rising gas costs,” Mr. Anthony said. “Our new Free Gas Program puts some power back into the hands of the consumer.”

All 31 Bi-Lo stores in the Chattanooga area will participate in program, which ends July 29. Tokens must be redeemed by Aug. 5, according to the grocer.
