Walter Adams

Walter Adams passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at a local hospital.

Survivor includes sister, Josephine Leonard.

Memorial services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, graveside at Cofer Cemetery.

Edith Bickford

Edith Webb Bickford, 92, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2008.

Edith was a native and longime resident of Pikeville. She was a retired school teacher having taught elementary and high school in Bledsoe County and was a member of the Teacher's Honor Society. Edith moved to Signal Mountain in 1973. She was a very active member of Taft Highway Church of Christ, where she taught the Ladies Bible Class.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, James Ernest Bickford; five brothers and wives, Nathe (Jeneviah) Webb, Herschell (Beulah) Webb, W. L. (Ruth) Webb, Frank (Miriam) Webb and Dewey Webb; two sisters and husbands, Lucille (Almer) DeBord and Leona (Arch) Douglas.

Edith is survived by her two children, Kaye (Thomas) Greer; and J.H. Bickford; two grandsons, Eric (Traci) Greer and Travis (Natasha) Greer; five great-grandchildren, Melanie, Rachel, Andrew, Anna and Elizabeth Greer; sister-in-law, Nova (Pete) Roberson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel with Minister Eric Greer and Travis Greer officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ralph Blevins

Ralph "Eddie" Blevins, 80, died on Sunday, March 2, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He worked for several years with Southern Saddlery, Tom Cat Overalls Co. and he retired from Service Mattress Co.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Glover Blevins; parents, James G. and Cornelia Gann Blevins; and one brother, Harold Blevins.

He is survived by one sister, Aline Blevins Scoggins and her husband, Alton Scoggins; one brother, Clyde M. Blevins and his wife, Barbara Blevins; sister-in-law, Sandra Blevins; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Robyn Burns

Robyn Elaine Burns, 25, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 2, 2008.

Robyn was a native of Durham, N.C., and attended Chattanooga School For The Arts and Sciences. She was currently a student at Austin Peay State University and was a William E. Brock Scholar in the University Honors Program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Robyn was currently employed with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. She was a member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church.

Robyn is survived by her son, Trevor Gann; her parents, Randy and Donna Burns; sister, Rachel Burns (Michael) Howard; grandparents, Frank and Ila Burns, Betty Hough and Joe Hough; great-grandmother, Beth Atchley; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rivermont Presbyterian Church with Dr. Daniel Sansbury officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Floyd Carr Jr.

Floyd Afton Carr Jr., a resident of Abbeville, Ala., died Sunday morning, March 2, 2008, in a Dothan, Ala., hospital. He was 79.

Mr. Carr was born and reared in Abbeville, a son of the late Floyd Afton Carr, Sr. and Luna Thelma Woodham Carr. He received a B.S. degree from Troy University and attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee, University of Memphis and Western Michigan University. Mr. Carr served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

He was retired from the Chattanooga City School System as a Distributive Education teacher. Mr. Carr was also formerly employed by Happy Valley Farms in Chattanooga where he lived most of his lifetime before returning to Abbeville in 1981.

Mr. Carr was a member of First Lutheran Church of Chattanooga and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Abbeville. A member of the National Education Association and the Retired Teacher's Association, he was a former member of the Jaycees in Rossville and also the American Legion and Lutheran Layman's League, both in Chattanooga.

Mr. Carr was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Marie Krekeler Carr; a daughter, Angie Marie Johnson Hall; a brother, John W. "Jack" Carr; and a sister, Wilmoth Carr Turner.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Marie Roberts Johnson Carr, Abbeville; three sons, Charles Edmund (Chuck) Carr and wife, Pamela Carr, Signal Mountain, Donnie Johnson and wife, Diane Johnson, Abbeville; Pat Johnson, Abbeville; six grandchildren, Daniel Johnson and fiancée, Jami Cooper, Ehren Johnson, Joey Hall and wife, Tena Hall, Danielle Hall, Dillon Johnson and Jess Johnson; a niece and eight nephews.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. CST Monday, March 3, 2008, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel, Abbeville, Ala. with Rev. Ray S. Reiley officiating.

Graveside services, with military honors, will be at 1 p.m. EST Thursday, March 6, 2008, in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Shannon Casteel

Shannon Derek Casteel, 36, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 2, 2008.

He was a 1989 graduate of Unity Christian High School. He was employed as a first pressman at Arcade Marketing Co. and was a member of GCIU Pressman's Local 165. Shannon was an avid gun collector. He was of the Assembly of God faith.

Shannon is survived by his parents, Garland and Ruby Casteel; brother and sister-in-law, Kelly and Deborah Locke; nephew, K.C. Locke; niece, Shelley Osegueda; grandmother, Fannie Casteel; uncles, Wendell, Farrell, Norman, and Steve Casteel, of Chattanooga, Lewis Casteel, of Dalton, Ga., and Clinton Beaver, of Port Wentworth, Ga.; aunts, Mary Swanson, Clarice Giddens, Leilla Dillard, Jean Rogers and Sandy Oakley, many surviving cousins; and special friends, Phil Jackson and Patrick Black.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Everett Warnock officiating.

Interment will take place in Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Chatsworth, Ga., with Arnold Brigdon, Farrell Casteel, Alvin Dunlap, Norman Casteel, Eric Chisnall, Steve Casteel, Phil Jackson and Patrick Black serving as pallbearers, with Bob Swanson as an alternate.

Donald Chaddick

Donald William Chaddick, of Chattanooga, died peacefully at age 77 under Hospice Care at Memorial Hospital, Friday, Feb. 29, 2008.

Don was born in Chattanooga to Mary Crawford McCollom and Donald Langdon Chaddick. He was raised in Angola, Ind., attended college in Ohio before serving in the Army where he played clarinet and piano in the U.S. Army Band. After his military service, he returned to Chattanooga to study music again—this time at the University of Chattanooga. A gifted musician, he taught at Cadek Conservatory, and was for years the accompanist for the Chattanooga Boys' Choir as well as the Chattanooga Opera chorus. He also was active in the Backstage Theatre.

Having worked some 20 years at the Provident Life Insurance Co., Don retired to St. Simons Island/Brunswick, Ga., where, for the next 10 years or so, he played piano—both with the Dinner Dance Band as well as soloist at the Cloister Beach Club. In 1997 he returned to Chattanooga to be near family and friends.

Don Chaddick will be remembered as a mentor and friend of the many he kept up with and cared for. He was talented, bright, gentle and kind to a fault. In his last days his good doctors and nurses were charmed by his humor, grace, tenacity and quiet courage.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mari-Jean Chaddick Wilfong.

He is survived by two cousins, Marty Chaddick and husband, David Mansfield, of Knoxville, Steve W. Chaddick, of Atlanta, along with his wife, Barbara and their son Justin, as well as Lemuel T. "Jack" Beene, his longtime friend and neighbor.

There will be a casual gathering of family and friends in memory of Don at the Beene residence from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2008.

Then at a later date there will be a graveside service in Angola, Ind., officiated by the Rev. George Minnix.

Robert Clayton

Robert Carl Clayton, 65, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008, at a local hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, was a retired machine operator for Planters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Lexie Clayton.

Survivors include his three children, Barbara (Jack) Cooper, of Fort Oglethorpe, Robert C. Clayton and Robbin Reneau, both of Chattanooga; two brothers, Ted Clayton, of Markham, Ill., and Steve Clayton, of Estill Springs, Tenn.; two sisters, Linda Thurman and Dale Marlowe, both of Estill Springs; loved one, Norma Clayton, of Chattanooga; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Luke Camlic officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park (The Duck Pond).

Edna Crabtree

Edna Clark Crabtree, 84, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 2, 2008.

A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, she graduated from Central High class of 1941, and also from McKenzie Business College. She was a member of Lee Anderson's Sunday school class at First Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Crabtree; and parents, James Aubrey and Beulah Clark.

She and her father published and distributed "Chattanooga Area Streets and How to Get There" since the 1950's. She was co-owner of Crabtree Realty and a retired Deputy Clerk at the Chattanooga Hamilton County Courthouse. Edna was a talented floral designer and wedding planner. She was active in planning her class of 1941 reunions.

Survived by daughters Elizabeth Ryon, of Marietta, Ga.; and Susie Low, of Hixson; sister, Jean (Bob) Phillips; grandsons, Jed and Josh Low; sister-in-law, Ann Graham, East Ridge; a niece and several nephews.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Forest Hills Cemetery with Lee Anderson officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Bob Ehrlich

Robert "Bob" Ehrlich, 71, a resident of Signal Mountain, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2008, in a local hospital following a short illness.

A native of Wyandotte, Mich., Bob was educated at Michigan Tech. He resided in Marion, Ohio, for 10 years and then in Ambridge, Pa., prior to making his home on Signal Mountain 20 years ago. An avid golfer, he was a member of Ambridge Golf and Country Club as well as Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club.

He was a loving and wonderful husband, father and grandfather; a mentor and friend to those he loved the most.

Bob was the son of the late Robert W. Ehrlich Sr. and Rosemary Miller Ehrlich. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Ehrlich.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Leimbach Ehrlich; three daughters, Amy Mount, Jody Hunter and Sarah Ehrlich; two brothers, George and Fred Ehrlich; sister, Sheryl Golden; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at 1 p.m. in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Bill Jackson officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Leimbach, Bill Byron, David Connor and Rusty Criminger.

Family and friends will gather on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home.

Robert Foster

Robert L. Foster, 76, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, in a Georgia hospital.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving in the Korean War. He was retired from Combustion Engineering as a crane operator and had worked for East Brainerd Lumber Co.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Foster; and a grandson, Anthony Foster.

Survivors include his children, Robert L. Foster II, of Warner Robbins, Ga., Mrs. Kathie L. McDaniel and Mrs. Teresa Richardson, both of Orlando, Fla. and Mrs. Melissa Kolben, of Chattanooga; two brothers, Billy Foster and Charles Foster, both of East Ridge; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Lisa Ann Grant, 40, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008.

She was a member of Mowbray Presbyterian Church.

Her parents, Lloyd and Imogene Grant; and two brothers, Michael and Steve Grant, preceded her in death.

Martha Novella Haynes, 83, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2008, at her home.

Lillie Mae Johnson, 100, Chattanooga, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, in a local hospital.

Born March 11, 1907, she was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church in Chattanooga.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Johnson.

Minnie May Johnson, 99, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, March 3, 2008, in a local healthcare facility.

She was a member of Woodland Heights Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Zack Johnson; son, Wilburn Lloyd Johnson; brothers, Terry William Smith and Robert Lloyd Smith; sisters, Helen Mildred Smith, Etta Elois Davis and Dorothy Lee Smith.

Survivors include her daughter, Doris Tuggle; sisters, Bessie Irvin, of Red Bank and Martha Sims, of Ooltewah; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

James Owens

James Paul Owens, 85, of Hamilton County and Ringgold, Ga., died Sunday, March 2, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a longtime resident of North Georgia and was a member of Tyner Church of God. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Owens was an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Hardy and Dora Belle Owens; and his wife of 30 years, Hazel Owens.

Survivors are sons, Richard "Cubby" (Jenny) Owens, Ringgold, James (Gale) Owens, James (Kim) Webb; daughters, Mildred (Melvin) Mathis, Diane McClain, Jackie Allison and Darlene Lowery; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.

Ollie M. Burgess Parker, 88, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2008, in a local healthcare facility.

Mrs. Parker, fondly known to all as "MOM", was the owner and operator of Mom's Italian Villa restaurant on Market Street in downtown Chattanooga for many years. An asset to our community, she received a certificate of appreciation for outstanding contributions to the community from Hamilton County.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy (George) Shuford, of Georgetown, Tenn.; a son, Charles David (Elaine) Parker, of Bluffton, S.C.; four grandchildren, Randy (Allyson) Shuford, of Chattanooga, Peggy (Jim) Coons of Fort Mill, S.C., Steven (Jennifer) Parker, of Tampa, Fla., Gary (Lisa) Shuford, of Chattanooga; sister, Geneva Thompson, of New Jersey; three brothers, Foster Burgess, of Florida, Kent Burgess, of Nashville and Carl Burgess, of Ohio; several great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Leona Poe

Leona Smartt Poe, 91, of Hixson, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Poe was born in Chattanooga to Oscar Lee and Dovie Bell Smartt. She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was retired from the Chattanooga Credit Bureau. She was a member of Dallas Bay Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughter, Charlotte Hodges; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and John Rathjen; sister, Juanita S. Newman; grandchildren, Michael Tatum, of San Rafael, Calif., Martin McGee, of Ringgold, Ga., and Kelly M. Davis, of West Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 S. Moore Road with Dr. David McNabb officiating.

Connie Rector

Connie Johnson Rector lost her fight to cancer on Sunday, March 2, 2008, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Oct. 19, 1957, in Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Johnson; and her daughter, Kimberly Malone.

Survivors include her son, Paul Brian Rector; four grandchildren, Carlos Hall, Felicia Norman, Austin and Paige Rector, all of Chattanooga; mother, Nina Johnson, of Chattanoooga; sisters, Beverly (Rick) Upton, of Suwanee, Ga. and Darlene Bono, of East Ridge; brother, Steve (Cherie) Johnson, of East Ridge; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews; and many special friends.

She was of the Baptist faith.

KIMBALL -- Charlie Richard Holt, 93, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of Kimball and South Pittsburg, Tenn., and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from TVA. He was a member of Nazarene Church in Jasper and a member Marion Lodge 515 F&AM and Tri-State Carpenters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James M. and Suzannah Vinson Holt; brothers, Harrison, Albert Lee, Virgil, Frank and Tom Holt; sisters, Flora Mae Morris and Beulah Pelham.

He is survived by his daughter, Reba Gail (Earl) Durham, of Ooltewah; sons, Darrell (Freda) Holt and Steve Holt Sr., both, of Kimball, Danny (Rhonda) Holt, of Chattanooga and Jerry Holt, of Soddy-Daisy; sister, Elizabeth Friel, of Chattanooga; several grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

SPRING CITY -- Pauline Jeannette Marshall, 89, died Saturday March 1, 2008, at her residence.

An Ohio native, she and her husband, Alva Del, moved to Spring City in the 1970s.

Pauline was the daughter of the late Mike and Bertha Linebaugh of Byron, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband Alva Del Marshall; sister, Pollyanna Cyphers; three brothers, Calvin, Don and Bob Linebaugh; and granddaughter, Lori Beth Kirchner.

She was of the Protestant faith.

Pauline was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother; a great-grandmother; and a great-great-grandmother.

She is survived by her sister, Alice (Calvin) Black, of Fairborn, Ohio; brother, Ray (Gloria) Linebaugh, of Kettering, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

Because two people fell in love, Pauline is also survived by her daughters, Sandy (Robert) Kirchner and Ginny (Gene) Murrell, both of Spring City; son, Jerry (Betty) Marshall, of Fort Myers, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Mullins officiating.

Burial will follow in Spring City Cemetery.

SPRING CITY -- Helen Virginia McClain, 95, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Baptist Hospital West in Knoxville.

Virginia, often called "Ginny" was born in Washington Courthouse, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Erma Ford Carr. Ginny moved to Rhea County in 2002 from Ohio to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Ginny Murrell. She was a member of Open Door Fellowship Church and Stillwater's Emmaus Community.

Ginny was raised on the farm and worked most of her life- bringing smiles to all she knew and met. Upon retirement she was able to travel for several years and never met a stranger. The last few months of her life she was residing at Deer Ridge Assisted Living in Dayton, where all loved and treated her as family. Ginny's life brought so much joy and laughter. One of her dearest friends was her daughter-in-law's mother, Pauline Marshall. They shared many family events and loved spending time together. How awesome of God to call Pauline home only 23 hours before Ginny. Together In Christ for certain! Both will be greatly missed. What greater peace could we ask!

Ginny was preceded in death by her first husband, Stanley Murrell; and her second husband, Ginn McClain; sisters, Mildred Hoover, Olive Long; brother, Marcus Carr; and stepson, Thom McClain.

Survivors include her son, Gene (Ginny) Murrell, of Spring City; stepdaughter, Cynthia (Charlie) Snell, of Melbourne, Fla.; stepson, John (Peg) McClain, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Robert (Susie) McClain, of Xenia, Ohio; stepdaughter-in-law, Loretta McClain, of Xenia, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Lola Baker

LaFAYETTE -- Lola Mae "Sis" Baker peacefully passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at the age of 89.

Sis was born Aug. 31, 1918 in Alarkie, N.C., to Lester and Dollie Oliver; one of 10 children. Her family eventually settled in LaFayette, where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Herndon C. "H.C." Baker. Sis and H.C. relocated to Jacksonville, Fla., following World War II to raise their two sons, J. Richard "Dick" and J. Daniel "Dan" Baker. For many years, she was a homemaker, homeroom mom and chauffeur. Later in life she worked for J.C. Penney in the children's department and then Lakewood Children's Shop until her health forced her to retire.

Her parents, seven of her siblings as well as her husband and eldest son, Dickie, predeceased her.

She is survived by her son, Dan; grandchildren, Rick Baker, Tim Baker, Allison Smith, Ansley Wilson, Brittany Baker, Courtney Baker and Lindsay Baker and several great-grandchildren. Her sister, Nell Jones; and brother, Jerry Oliver (Barbara) also survive her.

Walter Bedell

RINGGOLD -- Walter Francis Bedell, 83, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008 at a local hospital.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he has resided in the Ringgold area for the past 42 years and was formerly of Oneonta, Ala. Mr. Bedell was retired from the U.S. Air Force where he served during WWII and the Korean War. He was a former employee of McKee Baking where he worked for 17 years and was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. He was a member of the Air Force Association, Air Force Seargent Association and retired Enlisted Association.

Mr. Bedell was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Bedell; and two sisters, Evelyn Holmes and Mildred Gilbert.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Murtie Gargus Bedell of Ringgold; son, Steve Bedell, of Ringgold; brother, Charles Bedell Rudloff, of Stanford, N.C.; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

TRENTON -- Opal Perkins Boyd, 89, passed away Monday, March 3, 2008.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Whitwell and had worked as a cook for Hamilton County School System.

She was preceded in death by husband, Ray J. Boyd Sr.; parents, Sam and Julia Beasley Perkins; three brothers; four sisters; two grandchildren; and one great- grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, Terrell (Annette) Boyd, Trenton, Ray (Kay) Boyd Jr., Bon Aqua, Tenn., and Glen (Hope) Boyd, Medway, Maine; sister, Kathleen McGowan, Rossville; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel at noon CST Thursday, March 6, 2008, with Pastor Ray Boyd Jr. and Terrell Boyd officiating.

A 1960 graduate of Central High School he had been employed with the Electric Power Board and Dillard-Smith. He was a United States Marine veteran having served in Vietnam.

Calvin Herschel Wallace, 58, formerly of Rossville, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008, in Jacksonville, Fla.

A native of Piedmont, Ala., he had spent many years in the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas before moving to Florida 20 years ago. He was a self-employed landscaper, was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Wallace was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Wallace, parents, Calvin Edward and Carolyn Ruby Wallace; brother, Glen Earl Wallace; and sisters, Sandra and Brenda Wallace.

Survivors include his sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Ronnie Davis, of Rossville, Barbara and Tommy Drain, Rainsville, Ala., Wanda and Roger Drain, Fyffe, Ala., Deborah and Wade Drain, Dawson, Ala.; several nieces and nephews.
