March 2008 In the City
|
Editor's NoteThe joke’s on me!In the midst of rushing to put the final touches on this issue, one thought comes to mind. The joke is on me. This issue is focused on rejuvenation and renewal. You know, relax, rejuvenate, de-stress. Well, the joke’s on me, cause here I am in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and a runner on third (a little baseball to get you fired up for the coming season), and I’m stressed! Here’s the beauty though, in a day this issue will be humming on press, and I’ll be patting our staff on the back for a job well done. Then at least we get a brief window of reprieve. Now whether or not we get to relax, that’s up for debate. Most of us know the importance of taking a little time for ourselves. The benefits to our sanity and health that R&R can have are immeasurable, but as illustrated above, life and work can take over. It is vital that we all take time to find our own path to relaxation. You’ll be amazed at how many creative alternatives there are in our area that can lower your stress levels and even make your workweek seem more bearable! To be fair, we have on some level taken the theme of renewal to heart. In an effort to rejuvenate In the City, you will find several new talented writers in this issue’s pages. Our feature story, “The Benefits of Creative Expression,” was written by Tara Williams. Tara is a local Chattanoogan and has a background in marketing and public relations. She is currently a stay at home mom caring for her two beautiful girls. Tara says she loves to write for the adventures it sends her on. Though Brandi Scoggins is not new to us here at the paper, she is relatively new to writing for In the City. She has written the feature artist section for the last three issues and covered Cam Busch’s accomplishments in the field of art therapy for this issue. Brandi grew up in Harrison and has worked for the Times Free Press for the past 3 years. She currently writes full time for Community News. We have brought back our once routine In Rhythm section. Local freelance writer Lindsey Lowe has placed renewed life into this column. Lindsey is a new mom with a passion for all things musical. She spoke with the Tom Cordell Trumpet Improv Jazz Ensemble to get the scoop on their laid back and ever evolving musical sounds. Last but certainly not least, is an exciting addition to In the City. March’s dining review covered a new breakfast spot, the Bluegrass Grill. Confessed breakfast lover, Todd Carr hit the highlights. Todd is a recent transplant to our area. He and his wife, along with their brand new baby boy moved to Chattanooga by way of California where he worked as a writer for several TV programs. I’m sure after In the City has made it to final gloss, the staff will be able to sit back and take the message of slowing down to heart. Maybe we’ll even be able to relax enough to find our springtime smiles. I know they’ve been hiding in there somewhere this winter! Darah Burkett Editor, In the City |
