Tennessee: Chadwell edges Reynolds in final

Franklin’s Ian Chadwell and Knoxville’s Caitlyn Williams and Misha Testerman won singles championships Thursday in the USTA Tennessee Junior Qualifier at Baylor School.

About 15 singles players will advance from this tournament to the Southern Championships later this month.

Second-seeded Williams beat Germantown’s Allison Hodges 6-1, 6-1 in the Girls’ 18s final. Guinn Garcia of Knoxville beat Tarah Garner of Signal Mountain, 6-3, 6-1, for third place in the 18s.

Top-seeded Testerman won the 16s crown with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Knoxville’s Julia Hsu. For third place, Kayla McMurray of Knoxville beat Franklin’s Kaylene Chadwell, 6-1, 6-3. Chattanooga’s Katie Thornton won the consolation-bracket final, beating Maggie Leavell of Memphis, 7-5, 6-1.

Top-seeded Ian Chadwell defeated Chattanooga’s Will Reynolds, the second seed, in a tough 6-4, 6-4 match for the Boys’ 18s crown. Both players recently won TSSAA state singles championships during the high school season: Chadwell won his third in Class AAA, and Reynolds won his first in Class A/AA.

“I knew it was going to be a long, tough match, because I’d been watching him throughout the tournament and he’s been playing well,” Chadwell said. “It actually felt like we played a third set. I won some important points and that was really the difference, but the match was tighter than the score says.”

Chadwell and Reynolds traded leads throughout the match, with Reynolds ahead 4-3 in the second set before Chadwell rebounded to close out the match.

“I didn’t take care of my serve at all,” Reynolds said. “I was streaky and I lost my focus. I had some chances and I could’ve won it, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.”
