Tennessee: Unseeded Taylor tops No. 5 seed

Some high school state champions advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA Tennessee Junior Qualifier in Monday’s play at Baylor School and the Champions Club.

The tournament, which sends top singles finishers to the Southern championships later this month, has been extended to Thursday after being delayed a day because of thunderstorms Sunday.

Brandon Fickey of Knoxville was among those reaching the quarterfinals in boys’ 16s competition, along with David Henry of Signal Mountain, whom Fickey defeated in the recent TSSAA Division II-AA state final, and Will Reynolds of Chattanooga, the Class A/AA state champion. Richard Gamble of Harrison was another winner Monday.

In the girls’ 18s, Jennifer Taylor and Tarah Garner, both of Signal Mountain, won their round-of-16 matches. Taylor, unseeded, fought back from a 4-1 deficit in her first set to defeat fifth-seeded Alexa Flynn, 6-4, 6-2. Taylor won a TSSAA Class A/AA doubles championship with Notre Dame teammate Jennifer Brouner last month, and Garner won the classification’s singles crown.

“I started to relax and got focused on the match,” Taylor said. “I had never played Alexa before and she’s always a good player, and I knew she wasn’t going to go away and not just going to give it to me. I had to work for every point.”

Sarah Evans of Chattanooga beat Murfreesboro’s Kelly Gray, 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16. The 16-year-old Evans reached the final in last year’s qualifier and decided to age up in this year’s competition, entering unseeded in the 18s.

Evans won a TSSAA Division II state team championship with GPS was a state singles semifinalist. Gray won a Class AAA team championship with Siegel High and was a singles finalist.

“We went back and forth on it a lot, since I turn 17 in September, but it’s a good challenge,” Evans said. “There are a lot of good players in the 18s. Going in unseeded, I was kind of like the underdog, but there wasn’t much pressure. I’m just giving it my all, and whatever happens happens.”
