Editor's NoteIn “A proper date” Stephen Valadez comments on the death of “old fashioned dating.” Reading through his musings over why his generation (and I suppose mine) can’t seem to commit to one-on-one time long enough to sit through dinner and a movie, alone, just two people, got me thinking.Does our town provide enough opportunity for an “old fashioned date” to occur? Our features writer, Katy Mena, sampled a few unique one-on-one date options around our city to fi nd out, and it seems in fact, that it is possible. From plays to B&B’s, there is enough to keep Chattanoogans occupied this Valentine’s. And if we’ve helped out even one lonely single fellow by suggesting a great date spot, then we’re satisfied. By definition a date in the classical sense couldn’t occur without starting with a meal, right? Man invites woman to accompany him to said destination, she accepts, he picks her up and they spend the evening in each other’s company...this sounds wonderful—is there such a thing? A night out where there would be adult conversation, no high chairs, no having to eat with one hand while the other hand struggles to soothe my excited 9 month old. This seemed too good to pass up, so I tried it. I chose what I believe could quite possibly be one of the best “date” establishments for this month’s dining review. Only I invited the man, drove to meet him halfway, and picked up half the tab for reimbursement purposes (huh, maybe this wasn’t a date?). Well, despite not following Stephen’s prescribed date regulations, the meal (and conversation) were excellent and the Canyon Grill proved to be just as I had previously described it, one of the best. I have determined that “dating” is a relative term; that we each have an ideal of what romance means to us and this ideal was ingrained into our subconscious long before we ever set out to date. For me, the ideal date would be some creative adventure, maybe candlelight caving (sounds somewhat risky, doesn’t it?) or mountain climbing with a prepared picnic waiting at the summit. Just some ideas I’m tossing out there for Mr. Right (if he’s reading). Until next month, I hope all you ladies have a wonderful Valentine’s day.
