Numbers matter in Tennessee sports

KNOXVILLE — What’s in a number?
Very little, judging from my UT hoops notebook today.
I incorrectly reported former Vols great Bernard King’s number as 32, when, obviously, it was 53.
Judging by my e-mail inbox today, many of you noticed this as quickly as I did. Whoops. As we youngsters say, “My bad.”
Not that any of you care for an excuse, but I was listening to my Duke Crews interview from yesterday around the same time and simply typed Crews’ number.
Whoops.
Stay tuned for my Wednesday stories on UT football great Peyton Manning, who wore No. 11, and baseball great Todd Helton, who wore No. 7. Remember Lady Vols great Chamique Holdsclaw making all those slick open-floor moves in a No. 41 jersey? Maybe I can erroneously report the jersey numbers for the best player in every UT sport’s history!
As the saying goes, I will try to be better in tomorrow’s paper.
