Hamilton County Election Commissioner Joe Rowe resigned from the commission this morning to run for Chattanooga City Council, and results from the Aug. 7 state primary officially were certified, officials said.
The election commission met at 8:30 a.m. and certified the primary results, Charlotte Mullis, deputy administrator said. During the meeting, Mr. Rowe announced his intention to run for the District 5 City Council seat, formerly held by John Franklin Jr., officials said.
Luther Shockley now holds the seat as an interim councilman.
Ms. Mullis said only one person has qualified for the special election to fill the seat on Nov. 4. The deadline to run for the seat is noon Thursday, she said.
Russell Gilbert, a food service director at Parkridge Valley Hospital, is the only person to qualify so far, Ms. Mullis said.
Mr. Franklin gave up the seat after being indicted on money laundering and other charges in a federal drug-related case.
