Chattanooga: Prosecution rests in drug trial; defense to start this afternoon

The prosecution has rested in the drug trial of a suspected gang leader who is accusing a former Chattanooga police officer of planting crack cocaine during a 2006 traffic stop.

Lawrence Goodine arrested Leslie Allen during the stop, claiming he found about 10 grams of crack and a gun in the car in which Mr. Allen was a passenger.

Mr. Allen is on trial for possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.

But Mr. Goodine’s legal troubles in 2007 — he was prosecuted in state court for allegedly shaking down suspected drug dealers during traffic stops — led Mr. Allen to accuse the former cop of setting up his arrest as well.

A jury in March acquitted Mr. Goodine of all charges. He was never accused of planting drugs during traffic stops.

Defense attorney Ashley Ownby said he would call Mr. Goodine to the stand today to explain why a video seems to show a “little white baggie” falling close to the former officer’s feet during the arrest.

Mr. Ownby is expected to announce his intentions when court resumes this afternoon.
