University of Tennessee at Chattanooga: Mocs stretch lead in SoCon tournament

A Southern Conference championship is probable for one University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golf team but nearly impossible for the other.

The 12th-ranked UTC men’s team turned a one-stroke lead into an eight-shot advantage heading into the final round today at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence.

The Lady Mocs, however, are in fourth place and 20 strokes behind leader Furman at Charleston’s Links at Stono Ferry

Mocs junior Ben Rickett shot a 3-under-par 69 Monday for a two-day total of 141, and he owns the individual lead by one shot over three competitors.

“Ben has really come into his own,” coach Mark Guhne said. “He’s maturing on the golf course, learning to play within himself and making better decisions. He’s got a chance to do something special.”

The Mocs combined to shoot 6 under with Fredrik Qvicker’s 73 being dropped. It would have counted for any other team Monday. He is tied for fifth individually at 143. J.T. Clendenin is tied for ninth at 144, and teammates Jonathan Hodge and Derek Rende are tied for 14th at 146.

“They went out and played like they know how,” Guhne said. “On Sunday, they were extremely tight and tried not to mess up. Today, they relaxed and did what they all know how to do.”

Guhne said his team must continue attacking and not sit on their lead over the College of Charleston.

“We want all five guys to win it individually,” Guhne said. “If they do that, the team part will take care of itself.”

The Lady Mocs combined to shoot 25 over par Monday. Freshman Christine Wolf led UTC with a 76 and is tied for fifth at 6-over 150. Sophomore Kayla Stewart is tied for 14th at 154, and Emma de Groot and Katie Taylor are tied for 18th at 157.
