West to join UT hoops class at 3 p.m. today
KNOXVILLE — Two officials at Saginaw (Mich.) High School said minutes ago that point guard Daniel West will officially sign with the University of Tennessee today at a news conference at 3 p.m. Eastern. He will then fax the national letter of intent to Vols coach Bruce Pearl and become the third member of UT’s 2009 signing class.
The fourth commitment, All-American shooting guard Scotty Hopson from Hopkinsville, Ky., reportedly has told Pearl that he will sign next Monday or Tuesday.
West led Saginaw to its second consecutive Michigan Class A state championship this season, scoring 21 points and adding eight assists in the championship game over Detroit’s Pershing High.
The 6-foot-1, 165-pound West became a hot commodity for several major-conference Division I programs late in the recruiting process. He nearly signed with Bradley last fall in part because Saginaw coach Lou Dawkins held him out of AAU competition last summer to focus on academics. West is expected to enroll this summer as a full qualifier.
